Earthworm taxonomy workshop

3 days from Friday November 11th to Sunday November 13th, 2016

The post-conference workshop is intended to provide students and all interested participants with practical training in earthworm sampling, sample preservation, earthworm identification.

Programme

Day 1

  • Sampling, with demonstrations of the various collecting qualitative and quantitative methods.
  • Preserving samples for museums collections, for DNA analysis and for laboratory stock.
  • Presentation in PowerPoint and on the microscope of the main external morphological characteristics used in identification.
  • Description of exterior characters on a selection of individuals from different families, using a printed guide to the external morphology

 

Day 2

  • Presentation in PowerPoint and on the microscope of the main internal anatomical characteristics used in identification.
  • Dissection and description of internal characters on a selection of individuals from different families.

 

Day 3

  • Participants will work on the worms they bring to the course, or others we have in the demonstration collection.
